Red clover, a wild plant used as grazing food for cattle and other livestock, has also been used medicinally to treat a wide array of conditions. These have included cancer, mastitis (inflammation of the breast), joint disorders, jaundice, bronchitis, spasmodic coughing, asthma, and skin inflammations, such as psoriasis and eczema. Red clover is thought to "purify" the blood by promoting urine and mucous production, improving circulation, and stimulating the secretion of bile. Recently, specific chemicals in red clover -- known as isoflavones -- have been isolated and tested for their effectiveness in treating a variety of conditions. Although isolated isoflavone products are very different from the whole herb, they have shown promise in the treatment of a number of conditions associated with menopause, such as hot flashes, cardiovascular health, and the bone loss associated with osteoporosis

Red Clover acts as an antibiotic, appetite suppressant, blood purifier / depurative and relaxant. Good for bacterial infections, HIV and AIDS, inflamed lungs, inflammatory bowel disorders, kidney problems, liver disease, skin disorders and weakened immune system. Red Clover has been shown to have efficacy for respiratory system infections.
Red clover is considered to be one of the richest sources of isoflavones (water-soluble chemicals that act like estrogens and are found in many plants). It is used for hot flashes/flushes, PMS, lowering cholesterol, breast enhancement and breast health, improving urine production and improving circulation of the blood.
It is also used to help prevent osteoporosis, reduce the possibility of blood clots and arterial plaques and limiting the development of benign prostate hyperplasia.
Red clover extract is a substance derived from the red clover plant and used as an herbal medicine. This clover is indigenous to Europe, northwest Africa, and western Asia, but it has been introduced to many other regions of the world. Because it contains isoflavones and many nutrients, red clover extract is often used to treat ailments such as skin rashes, acne, cancer, osteoporosis, menopausal symptoms, and heart disease. The degree of effectiveness of the herbal extract is debated in the scientific community.
Red clover, also called trifolium pratense, cow grass, beebread, and meadow clover, is a fast-growing type of herb in the clover family. Red clover has three leaves and thin, fuzzy stems that culminate in four to six branches, depending on the type. Medium red clover stalks are shorter and have fewer branches, while mammoth red clovers grow taller, have longer stems, and larger flowerheads. The flowerheads are round and appear reddish-pink towards the outer side of their oblong petals, growing whiter towards the inside of the head.
Red clover has been used traditionally as a medicinal agent by Asian, European, and Native American cultures as an expectorant in asthma, and as an alterative (blood purifier) to treat psoriasis, eczema, and other chronic skin conditions.
Red clover contains isoflavones (estrogen-like compounds) which can mimic the effect of endogenous estrogen. The use of red clover to relieve menopausal symptoms has been shown to be sometimes ineffective, but safe. The isoflavones (like irilone and pratensein) from red clover have been used to treat the symptoms of menopause. A large, well-controlled study of high-isoflavone red clover extract supplements showed a modest reduction of hot flashes with Promensil, but not Rimostil, compared to placebo.
Traditionally, red clover has been administered to help restore irregular menses and to balance the acid-alkaline level of the vagina to promote conception.
Red clover has been reported to be used for a variety of medicinal purposes, such as the treatment of bronchitis, burns, cancers, ulcers, sedation, asthma, and syphilis.
It is an ingredient in eight-herb essiac tea.
